European wine trade – status quo.
One of the biggest risks to growing wine
- the winter frost – did not have an especially negative influence on the 2012 vintage. Small wine growing areas in Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia were hit by temperatures as low as -20 °C. Damage levels may run at about 10-20%. However, most of Europe’s vineyards survived the winter without any problems. The real problems in Europe are the very small vintages of Italy and Spain. In both countries, there is a severe lack of some wines. There still is a tendency towards price increases. Nobody knows what will happen until the next vintage. Nowadays, it is often more difficult to find the wines required than it is to sell them. Perhaps the new 2012 vintage from South America will bring some relief.

Final Austrian vintage 2011
According to “Statistik Austria”, the official figures for the 2011 Austrian vintage are:
White wine 1,840,040 mill. hl = 65,4 hl/ha Red wine 964,353 mill. hl = 62,0 hl/ha Total 2011 2,814,754 mill. hl = 64,2 hl/ha Total 2010 1,737,454 mill. hl = 39,8 hl/ha 2006-2010 2,393,473 mill. hl = 53,8 hl/ha Area under vine in 2011: 43.800 ha
Wine stocks as at the end of November 2011 were 2.2 mill. hl, which is the lowest figure since 1998. This explains the stable price situation, which is rather high.
